This is not an easy topic to discuss. And we imagine that, if it hasn’t yet, it will break your heart too.
To be honest, this is a film series we wish we didn’t have to make. But here we are.
Are we, as a nation, going to allow the mentally ill to end their lives with the aid of their family physicians in Canada? If we do, who will be next?
These questions are haunting us right now at Unveil, the more we learn about medical assisted death (MAiD) in Canada.
And we’re going on an uncharted journey to pursue those answers.
What is going on?
Like many other Canadians, we’re awakened and alarmed by the stories and statistics we see in the news. The government is planning to expand MAiD to include mental health and is exploring opening death at the hand of family physicians to “mature minors.”
On Vancouver Island, where 2/3 of Unveil’s Kooman Brothers call home, MAiD accounts for 11% of all deaths.
You read that right.
You may have seen sensational stories in the news like the one about the homeless man seeking MAiD because he can’t afford housing or the shocking testimony of a veteran being offered MAID in lieu of a much-needed, long awaited wheelchair ramp.
What is going on?
As a studio, we’ve been tasked with exploring that question through film.
MAiD in Canada
It’s been a busy couple of weeks!
Our phones have been ringing and our inboxes are filled with conversations with medical experts, community organizers, physicians, legal experts, family members and veterans. Their stories, their alarm, their insight and the facts coming to the light have convinced us we need to share their stories and concerns with others.
So, we wanted to ask for your help.
Help “MAiD” get made
Our hope is to make this new documentary series available for free so that Canadians can be informed about the issue and what’s at stake.
Would you consider supporting the series to get it off the ground? We’re aiming to raise money for travel (for interviews with key voices) as well as marketing (to spread the word).
And it’s all happening fast. This is a critical moment in Canadian history. The March 2023 plan to expand MAiD to include mental health is currently “delayed.” The time for awareness is now.
Any amount will help (anything from coffee change to change the world funds 🫶).
We hope you’ll join us for this new filmmaking adventure in a way that fits your life right now: Pray about the issue; Give if you can; Spread the word.
It matters. And it’s a matter of life and death.
Sincerely,
The Kooman Brothers
Very interested in this topic. Will you be addressing the topic of MAiD organ harvesting?
